I think it’s time for you all to give their office a phone call and politely ask the Governor General to come out and meet with Clinton and the Aboriginal Elders at the Aboriginal Tenty Embassy on September 6.

Here’s the number: (02) 6283 3533

Day 351: 10.30am

[Admin Toby] In a movement to educate wider Australians of ongoing Indigenous wage discrimination, during the lead up to the 50th anniversary of the Wave Hill walk-off in August 2016, a flash mob style “art installation” was staged as a form of protest which took social media by storm.

The First Nations Workers’ Alliance followed as a new organisation formed alongside the Australian Unions. With CDP workers and the community they serve to give a voice to workers being exploited, while campaigning to end the CDP and replace it with a program that works for Indigenous people rather than oppressing them.

We were really pleased to see Zachary Joseph Wone caught up with Clinton in La Perouse!

Here is more info about FNWA from Australian Unions:

The Turnbull Government’s Community Development Program (CDP) is depriving tens of thousands of people of that opportunity. It’s punitive, heavy-handed and racially discriminatory and the Union movement is determined to see it removed.

CDP workers are not actually classified as workers. They get well below the minimum wage (the dole pays $11.60/hour or $290/week) for working for 25 hours a week for non-profit and now for-profit businesses.

They are not covered by the Fair Work Act, they don’t have Federal OHS protections or workers compensation and they can’t take annual leave, sick leave or carer’s leave.

Those under the CDP are forced to work up to three times longer than city-based jobseekers to receive welfare payments.

CDP workers have 70 times the financial penalties imposed upon them than non-remote dole workers.

Fines for missing activities under CDP – which coverers a tiny fraction of the population – account for more than half the total penalties across the entire welfare system.

[Admin Toby] This time last year was the 50th Anniversary of the Wave Hill walk-off, which is commemorated every year by a festival at Kalkaringji and Daguragu. This video clip captures the parade on the path of the walk-off, concert and fireworks to a live edit of ‘From Little Things, Big Things Grow’.

On the 23rd of August Vincent Lingiari led the workers and families to walk off Wave Hill station and begin their seven-year strike. Initially, a strike against work and living conditions, it soon became a long campaign for the return of thier most sacred lands.

In 1967, Gurindji petitioned the Governor-General, claiming 1,295 km² of land near Wave Hill. Their claim was rejected. While Dagaragu would eventually become the first cattle station to be owned and managed by an Aboriginal community, today known as the Murramulla Gurindji Company, it took many years before the Gurindji achieved this.

In 1969 the Liberal-National CountryCoalition government was given a proposal to give eight square kilometres back to the Gurindji. Cabinet refused even to discuss the issue.

In support of the walk-off there were demonstrations and arrests in southern Australia and many church, student and trade union groups gave practical and fundraising support to the Gurindji struggle.

Vincent Lingiari, Billy Bunter Jampijinpa and others toured Australia, with the support of workers’ unions, to give talks, raise awareness, build support for their cause and have meetings with major lawyers and politicians. Frank Hardy recalled at a fundraising meeting, a donor gave $500 after hearing Vincent Lingiari speak. The donor – who said he had never before met an Aboriginal person – was a young Dr Fred Hollows the eye surgeon.

Hardy also records Pincher Manguari as saying:

“We want them Vestey mob all go away from here. Wave Hill Aboriginal people bin called Gurindji. We bin here long time before them Vestey mob. This is our country, all this bin Gurindji country. Wave Hill bin our country. We want this land; we strike for that.”

In 1975, the Labor government of Gough Whitlam negotiatiated with Vesteys to give the Gurindji back a portion of their land. This was a breakthrough in the land rights movement in Australia.

“I want this to acknowledge that we Australians have still much to do to redress the injustice and oppression that has for so long been the lot of Black Australians.”

The handback took place on 16 August 1975 with Whitlams speach and the famous gesture of pouring sand into Vincent’s Lingiari’s hand.

Day 344: 2pm

[Admin Toby] Transcription of David Suzuki at the National Day of Action, Campbeltown NSW. 30 October 2016.

“You see, the issue is not one of racism, its about a colonial mindset and the battles you are having here are the same battles we are having in North America and in South America and in Africa. A colonial mentality that is not interested in Mother Earth.

I am astounded at the fact that you – Indigenous people still exist on this Land after all thats been done to you and I thank you. I thank you because we depend on you now, we need your leadership and the way of seeing the world that you have.

You see we have been blanketed by a mindset that does not see Mother Earth but sees resources and opportunities and its become a very powerful force – I am not Indigenous but I am here to say I am with you – to battle, because I am against the same mindset.

Someone said earlier that you want justice; you can not expect justice from a system that is built on denying the biggest crime of them all, which was that people came here and took your land! How can you have justice from a system that was built on that great crime to begin with?

So what I say is ‘we are now in a battle around the world’. A battle against the mentality that no longer sees the Earth as sacred. That no longer sees the Earth as our Mother. The very source of our lives and our well being.

And this is not any longer something that only Indigenous people have, it is people like me, people around the world who are beggining to realise that to talk about sustainability means that the only people on the Planet that know about sustainability are the people who have lived in place for thousands of years. And through the mistakes and failures and successes of their Elders, understand deeply what it means to live on the Land – with the Land.

So I just want to say thankyou. Thankyou for hanging on despite the horrors of what you’ve lived through. Your hanging on to something and we non-Indigenous want to work and help you work – with you, because we’ve got to overthrow the mentality that is ultimitely destroying this Planet.”

Early this morning. I never had the earge to howl at it. But I have. The dingos do sound a lot better than me, after I had turned off my alarm early one morning in the west, the dingos howling started first one, then two then three, soft and a gentle howling, no sound of aggression, just an answer to a strange sound of music they have never heard befor. Bitter sweet, they had heard the sound of the violin. They must have like it. They have good tast in music. – Noonie

Day 332: 5.30am

Day 332: 6am

Clinton’s Walk For Justice calls for support rallies and events to be held all across the country on September 3, as Clinton’s big Canberra arrival event is held.

We’ll be calling on the Governor General to meet with Clinton and begin discussions about treaty – sovereign to sovereign.

We encourage all people – from the cities all the way out to the remote communities – to take part in a national day of action to push for treaty and address issues of injustice faced by both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

Some event ideas you could use:

  • A big bus-ride to Canberra!
  • Convoy to Canberra!
  • Organise rallies in your city or town!
  • Hold big gatherings,
  • Do a dance for justice,
  • Hold treaty-parties,
  • Put up posters and banners in public,
  • Write letters to the Governor General and mail them all together on Sept 3
  • Or maybe do your own walk for justice through your town!

And make sure to create your local events on Facebook and let us know about them through the Clinton’s Walk For Justice Facebook Page, we’ll help you spread the word! You can even make us co-host if you like!

Post your photos and videos with the hashtags: #ClintonsWalk and #TreatyNOW

Non-Aboriginal people – it’s time to stand up in support of treaty and justice for Aboriginal people, come stand with us.

Help us finally move this country forward.

***UPDATE***

Democracy in Colour have organised a series of buses running from major cities to Canberra for this event. It is ticketed and we will be updating as we hear more. Check the Facebook Events page for more details.

Day 332: 8.30am

Got a email from The Museum of Australian Democracy.

I work at the Museum of Australian Democracy, based at Old Parliament House, across the road from the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra.

Clinton we’ve been following your journey with great interest and we’re all excited about your arrival in Canberra, especially now you’ve named the day.

We’re a museum that collects items that, amongst other things, represent people’s efforts to bring about better conditions for people and raise awareness of different issues.

I’m contacting you to see if you would be interested in donating something to the museum from your walk. We would love to be able to display something that tells visitors to the museum about your journey and what you were aiming to do. We’re thinking about something like one of your many pairs of worn out runners, or a flag or banner, or maybe something that someone gave you during the journey.

If you’re is happy to do this we could do a handover on the day of your arrival, when I imagine media will be there, to add another dimension to your arrival, or we could do it in the days afterwards, depending on what demands there are on your time.

Day 332: 11am

BBC news from London has email me asking to do a live interview over in London on Skype about the walk for justice. They most of gotten the story from The New York Time. The BBC news in London has over 44million follower. If I do it I know the British government and royal family will be watching it. The three think I be letten BBC news is that.

Opinions.1 = It time for the crown to had back the country of the land down under to the sovereign ower of this land we live on. It is because this country was never your in the first place your systems is a illegal and there is no treaty in place.

Opinions. 2 = On the behalf of my people and the Australian people we call on the Crown to come down here to deal with this matter we have with the Australian government because the Australian government is no long a sovereign British parliament. It now a Australia corporation government sin 1972 and this government put this law in place without putting it into a referendum for the people to vote on it and they a not following original constitution law.

Opinion. 3 – On the behalf of my people the sovereign people of this land. We call on the crown to Finley come forward and to ask for represent on the behalf of the crown to come down to the land down under to talk about treaty between us and the crown.

We what to move this country forward and we as a musculature people what the crown to hand back this land to Sovereign people an leave as friends. But we what governor general practice to be place by a governor culture council who is run by Sovereign elder’s and there be chairs for none indigenous. So the power is given back to the people and that this government should be over seen by the people.

This what the people of the land down under what.

[Admin Toby] The Larrakia petition followed an earlier 6-point petition from the Larrakia people and their supporters in March 1972, calling for the McMahon government to establish a commission to negotiate treaties with Indigenous language groups. This appeal was described by Judith Wright as, ‘the first move in the direction of the demand for treaties’.

The wording of the petition were in response to the reply from Prime Minister McMahon in June, 1972, rejecting the call for treaties with Aboriginal people, and stating that it was not appropriate to negotiate with British subjects as though they were foreign powers.

According to the National Archives of Australia, in their publication Memory of a Nation ‘The petition was forwarded to the Queen’s representative in Australia, the Governor-General [Sir Paul Hasluck], and was deposited in the National Archives in 1975.’ The complete document is available on-line on the National Archives website (NAA 1973c).

Day 309: 7am

I was walking this morning and i came a cross a section of the Forrest has been cut down from login. I when out to the open and sat down and think about this place was once a Forrest with beautiful wild life but now it non-thinking but dead land.

This section of the Forrest opened my eyes and made me release what destination can do to the nature it self and greed of man can do to mother earth. We as a human race must change our way or we well live in a world of non think but polited land and what live on this earth with us well be gone an I mean the wild life it self.

I know in my heart we can change our way’s and I believe we can to help mother earth real health it self and not a loud greed to get the best of us.

My people live here for over 100,000 year something and we managed to take care of mother earth. But technology in the last 200 year has destroyed a lot of the earth it self. It time for the world an world leader need to listen to first people around the world who know how the land work, it time for everyone to listen to us or everything well be lost because of greed.
