Day 307: 6am

Friday 14th July. On our way to Eden.

The mountains were covered in a smoke haze in the distance. The opening in the clouds aloud the sun to beam the light down, also along the slope.

That evening we had a visit by our two walkers Moureen and Ileine (hope my spelling in right) sister’s. Once again a story of a life in the bush to evade the Government process of taking children away.

Then came their story of life on their Country and the struggle with Government over the land on their Country. The same process and talk from Perth to Cann River. I had also received a photo to pass on. I have chosen this opportunity to pass it on.

The photo is a heart with the First People’s, Colours, of the First Nations of this Continent. The heart represents the Mother’s love. Mother to children, children to Mother and one of Country and the Earth. Culture. The impact of the Empire is still been used today, the Mother’s are still suffering today.

Theses two sisters, soft speaking women talk and speak the same, as all the people across the Continent. A great Continent of people’s with, an out dated Government values, that are not representing the people. – Noonie

Day 299: 8.30pm

[Admin Post] In a heated NAIDOC line up of speeches in Darwin today, the focus was on the continued NT intervention. Clinton’s Walk for Justice feature two speakers and the DCC dance incentive creating awareness of incarceration: One Mob Different Country.

Auntie Josie Crawshaw of the ‘No Justice – Just Us’ campaign spoke about CDP – Community Development Program (which was CDEP – now minus the word “Employment”) work for the dole and Centrelink’s Mutual Obligation requirements. The reality of being breached is resulting in starvation, personal and family breakdown continuing as a serious oppressive situation of epidemic proportion in community right now – on our watch – before our very eyes in this day and age 2017.

Work for the dole with no Work Cover, union representation or superannuation is modern slavery, with the Basic Card and Income Management breaching human rights and basic human dignity. This together with suspension of payments in part decided on by privatised job network agencies is driving suicide rates, family breakdown and child removals, petty crime and arrests to unprecedented levels – the highest in the world.

Since the intervention, the paperless arrest judicary and punishment “lock em up” system is perpetuating the loss of cultural continuance, language, community and family kinship, totemic heritage and local ecological knowledge. This is continued genocide. Mutual Obligation and youth detention are forcing this generational gap as more people must move off country. The administration costs of income management and paternalistic punitive approaches from government policy could be going to more early awareness, education and community initiatives that encourage and facilitate incentive and reward in local enterprise and small business, land care, arts and cultural development.

Again and again we are calling on the government to listen and act together on the concerns of our Elders and community representatives.

John Lawrence spoke of the term JUSTICE. The opportunities the Royal Commission into Youth Detention have brought to highlight these injustices, the entrenched racism and perpetual genocide occurring in Australia, while this nation boasts of being one of the wealthiest contries in the developed world. Its position on the UN Human Rights Council is a joke Mr Lawrance said, the senior lawyer giving a personal case example of the consequences of locking up a 14 year old to whom every level of government including the Minister are continually complicit.

The stark reality is why the emphasis is going to building bigger prisons and detention centres when we could be building better schools with better education, better support and services in prevention, rehabilitation and training. He went on to acknowledge we are tired of words, policies and political tricks, calling Parliament House a junk yard, a circus and how important it is to keep standing together in the truth that Soverienty has never been ceded.

– Admin Toby

From Larrakia Nation website:

One Mob Different Country is a program that has been operating out of the Darwin Correctional Centre (DCC) for approximately 12 years. The program allows low-security Indigenous prisoners who have demonstrated good behaviour to take part in performing traditional aboriginal dances at events – including community, government and not for profit organisations. The dancers have been given permission from the Elders of the Beswick and Barunga communities to perform certain dances and songs from that region.

The name One Mob Different Country refers to the fact that the dancers themselves may come from different communities (different country) but they come together as a group to dance (as one mob). The dancers are not paid to perform. Instead the funds go to the Department of Correctional Services to support this enterprise program and others – for capacity building and creating a positive, sustainable future for those in the program.

Accompanied by live music of clap sticks and/or didgeridoo.

$1,950 (+gst) for approximately 15-20 minutes duration
